" No one realizes how beautiful it is to travel until he comes home and rests his head on his old, familiar pillow " by - Lin Yutang
Famous as the location of Angkor Wat and the UNESCO-listed Angkor Archaeological Park, Siem Reap not surprisingly derives most of its income from tourism. A small city that operates at a relaxed pace, Siem Reap is extremely tourist-friendly – the US Dollar is accepted (if not preferred) almost everywhere, accommodation is some of the cheapest in Asia and Pub Street provides plenty of opportunities for travelers to mingle.
Hotels in Siem Reap center range from the very basic to the very lavish. Tuk tuks and motorcycle taxis enable movement throughout town and Pub Street dishes up the full spectrum of food. Local delicacies are worth seeking out – snake and frog are regional treats and can be sampled in an open air karaoke joint or in the high-end Khmer restaurant, Meric. The FCC Angkor, though less famous than its sister establishment in Phnom Penh, is still the coolest place in town for after hours drinks.
Angkor Archaeological Park lies just outside Siem Reap. Covering hundreds of square kilometers, the main tourist areas are Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom (made famous in Tomb Raider) and Pre Rup, a crumbling Khmer temple from the 10th century. Each of these sites is worth at least a full day's exploration and all are best seen in the early morning or late afternoon, as sub-tropical heat and crowds can make sightseeing in the middle of the day quite challenging.
Off the temple trail, Siem Reap has a number of different activities for visitors. Eco-tours are popular, owing to the city's commitment to providing sustainable tourism and travelers are able to support the local community by visiting orphanages, buying handicrafts from the night markets or taking a day trip to one of the neighboring villages. Siem Reap also has a land mine museum, which is an interesting, if sobering, reminder of Cambodia's troubled past.
International flights to Siem Reap land at Angkor International Airport, a 15-minute drive from the center of town. Hotels along Siem Reap Airport Road have the fastest access to the airport and are still convenient to the town center and Angkor Wat.
